Dr. Wiam Hussein completed all of his postgraduate medical training in the United States of America, reflecting a foundation built on excellence, rigor, and global standards of care.

After graduating from an Internal Medicine residency program, Dr. Hussein was honored with the prestigious Best Resident of the Year Award and the Dr. Philip D’Ambola Memorial Resident Award, recognizing his exceptional clinical performance, leadership, and academic achievement.

He subsequently pursued advanced subspecialty training in Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolism at one of the world’s most renowned medical institutions, The Cleveland Clinic Foundation (Ohio, USA). There, he completed two highly specialized fellowships in Diabetes and Endocrinology, placing him among a select group of physicians with such comprehensive and advanced training.

During his tenure at the Cleveland Clinic, Dr. Hussein received multiple national and institutional honors, including a first-place national research award in the United States from the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists (AACE) and the American College of Endocrinology (ACE), in recognition of his impactful research and publications.

In 1998, Dr. Hussein returned to the Gulf region, where he went on to establish a world-class center for Diabetes, Endocrinology, and Osteoporosis in Saudi Arabia, setting new benchmarks in patient care, academic contribution, and regional excellence in endocrine medicine.

Dr. Wiam Hussein went on to make history in the Gulf region by becoming the first director of the Joslin Diabetes Center Affiliate in the Kingdom of Bahrain, in direct collaboration with the Harvard Joslin Diabetes Center team. Under his leadership, the center rapidly evolved into a highly successful, internationally aligned Diabetes and Endocrine Center, setting new standards of excellence in patient care and clinical outcomes in Bahrain.

A visionary leader in organized endocrinology, Dr. Wiam Hussein is the solo Founder of the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists (AACE) Gulf Chapter, established to serve all six GCC countries, making it the largest unified endocrine organization ever created in the Gulf region. This organization later evolved into what is now known as the Gulf Association for Endocrinology and Diabetes (GAED). He wrote the Bylaws in 2012 for AACE-Gulf Chapter and still used by GAED. 

Dr. Wiam Hussein has held multiple key leadership roles within the Association, including Secretary, Treasurer, and long-standing Member of the Board of Directors, before serving as President of the Gulf Association for Endocrinology and Diabetes (2024–2025)—the largest and most influential Endocrinology and Diabetes association in the Gulf countries. His leadership has been instrumental in shaping professional standards, education, collaboration, and regional integration in endocrine care. 

During his presidency, Dr. Wiam Hussein elevated the Association to an unprecedented international level by formalizing strategic affiliations and collaborations with the leading global endocrine bodies, including the Endocrine Society (USA) and the European Society of Endocrinology (ESE). These landmark partnerships positioned the Association on the global endocrine map, strengthened academic exchange, and aligned regional practice with the highest international standards of education, research, and clinical excellence.

Under his leadership, Dr. Wiam Hussein also spearheaded the development of a world-class, state-of-the-art digital platform for the Association, transforming its website into a globally competitive, professionally structured, and internationally visible hub for education and scientific engagement, further solidifying the Association’s stature as a modern, forward-looking, and globally connected professional organization.

In recognition of his profound impact, Dr. Wiam Hussein has received numerous national and international honors for his contributions to Diabetes and Endocrinology in Bahrain and across the Gulf region. Among these, he was selected as the recipient of the prestigious AACE Gulf Chapter Ibn Sina Distinguished Service Award (2018), awarded in recognition of his exceptional and sustained contributions to the advancement of Diabetes and Endocrinology.

Dr. Wiam Hussein is also the Founder and Chairman of the Bahrain Diabetes and Endocrine Review (BDER), the largest and most prominent Endocrinology and Diabetes congress in the Kingdom of Bahrain, attracting regional and international experts and serving as a cornerstone for continuing medical education in the country for generations to come.

Further extending his regional academic influence, he is a Founding Member and Treasurer of the Arab Thyroid Association, wrote the bylaws and helped get a world-class PCO, contributing to the advancement of thyroid science, education, and collaboration across the Arab world. He is now the vice president of the Arab Thyroid Association 2025-2026

With over 28 years of distinguished clinical and academic experience spanning the United States, Saudi Arabia, and Bahrain, Dr. Wiam Hussein established his highly respected practice in Bahrain. His clinic is widely recognized across the Gulf region as a referral center of excellence for the management of Thyroid diseases and thyroid cancer, Parathyroid disorders, Adrenal disorders, Pituitary disorders, Obesity and metabolic disorders, Osteoporosis, Hirsutism and endocrine-related hair disorders, Hyperlipidemia and Hypertension, Diabetes and comprehensive adult endocrine disorders.
